Helping Your Child Understand The Importance Of Self-Care Skills

Self-care skills are something that all children must learn. These types of skills are strong building blocks toward independence and learning to complete necessary daily tasks on their own.

Self-care skills, including personal hygiene, household chores, and communication development can all be taught with the help of our Batavia & Port Charlotte pediatric occupational therapists.

For more information about how Therapy Care can help your child enhance their self-care skills, contact our Batavia or Port Charlotte occupational therapy offices today!

Developing Healthy Self-Care Skills In Port Charlotte

It is important that children develop healthy self-care skills early, but some children may find this more difficult than others.

By helping your child understand at a young age why personal care, chores, and communication are all important life skills, you can help them to better become a more rounded person as they age.

As stated by the Autism Awareness Centre,

“It’s important to practice chores to work towards greater independence. Some chores can also be worked into a sensory diet. Having a child do household chores makes them feel they are contributing members of the family.”

Certain daily tasks can also help your child with the development of fine and gross motor skills that they may be lagging in.

Your child’s occupational therapist will work with you to develop strategies to help your child build important skills such as grooming (brushing teeth, combing hair, etc.), feeding (using utensils and napkins properly) and dressing independently, as well as improving social skills, fine motor skills, and visual perception skills.

Guided strategies that you can use at home and at your child’s school will also be provided. Strategies will be adjusted over time as your child learns new skills and is able to function more independently.

Amanda Kramer is the best speech therapist!  She has helped me with my speech sounds to speak more clearly, work on figurative language, and writing narratives.  I really appreciate all the help she has given me over the years.  I started working with her when I was in high school, and I still go see here after I started in college.  Thank you!

It’s always emotionally tough to learn your child isn’t hitting expected milestones. Luckily, we had a really great experience with our speech therapist, Andrea. My son is an extremely shy kid and she quickly got him to warm up to her in their sessions at his in-home daycare. We clearly observed his progress at home, and were impressed at how well her lessons were sticking with him. I also appreciated the fact that she was an excellent communicator and would always keep me posted on how he was doing, and what letters or phrases he had mastered saying. Andrea was kind, flexible, and was exactly who I (and my son) needed at a time when he needed speech therapy, and I needed reassurance that he was going to be OK. Highly recommend Therapy Care.
